Arthritis — inflammation of joints due to infectious, metabolic, or constitutional causes

Axial skeleton — the bones in the head, back, and chest

Cardiovascular — of, relating to, or involving the heart and blood vessels

Chronic — of long duration; continuing

Cognitive — of or relating to the mental process of knowing, including aspects such as awareness, perception, reasoning, and judgment

Exertion — expense of effort

Fibromyalgia — a disorder characterized by achy pain and stiffness in soft tissues including muscles, tendons, and ligaments

Genetic — of or related to genes and heredity

Genitourinary system — the bodily system that is made up of genital and urinary organs

Inflammation — a local response to cellular injury that is marked by increased blood flow and sensations of heat and pain as the body attempts to heal itself

Ligament — tissue that surrounds joints and connects bones to each other

Muscle — bundles of fibers that contract to produce movement

Myofascial — of or relating to the flat layers of fibrous tissue that surround and separate muscle tissue

Nervous system — the bodily system that is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves

Neurological — of or related to the brain and nerves

Neurotransmitter — a substance that transmits nerve impulses

Osteoarthritis — arthritis marked by degeneration of the cartilage and one of joints

Overexertion — expense of effort beyond an appropriate level

Psychiatric — of or relating to a branch of medicine that deals with mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders

Rheumatic — of or related to any of various conditions characterized by inflammation or pain in the muscles, joints, or fibrous tissue

Rheumatoid arthritis — a usually chronic disease of unknown cause that is characterized especially by pain, stiffness, inflammation, swelling, and sometimes destruction of joints

Sleep apnea — a temporary suspension of breathing occurring repeatedly during sleep

Tendon — a tough band of connective tissue that attaches a muscle to a bone

Temporomandibular joint — the place on each side of the face, just in front of the ears, where the temporal bone of the skull connects to the lower jaw

TMJ — temporomandibular joint syndrome; a group of symptoms that may include pain in the temporomandibular joint, headache, earache, neck, back, or shoulder pain, limited jaw movement, or a clicking or popping sound in the jaw and that are caused either by dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint or another problem affecting the region

Ultrasound — a mechanical vibration that can be well focused at high frequencies to create internal heating of tissue without harming nearby tissue
