Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years as therapy for a variety of symptoms. There is little research in the use of acupuncture for the treatment of pain associated with fibromyalgia; however, studies have shown some benefit in other chronic pain conditions. Acupuncture is performed by medically-trained professionals via the insertion of needles along areas called meridians to help align energy between organs and sub-organ systems. Once the needles are inserted, they may be manipulated either physically or with heat or electricity.

Acupuncture may be performed by an individual licensed in this therapy or by a physician who also is specially educated in acupuncture techniques. Acupuncture often is used in combination with medications, exercise, and other modes of treatment to relieve symptoms of pain and fatigue. Multiple sessions often are required to achieve a positive effect.

Please see your physician to discuss the treatment approach that may be appropriate for you. Treatment of any kind should not be undertaken without the authorization and supervision of your physician.
