About Fibromyalgia (FMS)

I have Fibromyalgia
If you have Fibromyalgia, we suggest going to Living With Fibromyalgia to learn more about managing and living with the condition.
Fibromyalgia (FYE-bro-my-AL-jah), also known as fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), is a condition marked by achy pain and stiffness in the body's soft tissues, such as the muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Estimated to affect between 2% and 4% of the population, FMS is the second most commonly diagnosed rheumatic disorder after osteoarthritis. The hallmark symptoms of FMS are chronic pain and stiffness throughout the body accompanied by extreme fatigue, poor sleep, and headache. Other common symptoms may involve the heart, lungs, nervous system, digestive system, or genitourinary system, as well as "allergic" reactions and mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. Patients with FMS suffer similar or greater disability, more pain, and lower quality of life than patients with rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis.

Historically, fibromyalgia has defied simple medical explanation. More recent research shows that FMS is a clearly identifiable medical condition that may have a genetic component. Additionally, it now appears that there are a number of measurable differences in biochemical, hormonal, and neurotransmitter systems in patients with FMS and those not afflicted. It is hoped that with further research the understanding of FMS will continue to increase so that better diagnostic tools and treatments can be developed.

In the meantime, there are a number of approaches available involving drugs and a variety of other treatments to help manage the symptoms of FMS. Additionally, new medications that may prove more effective for fibromyalgia are currently being tested. While existing treatment does not offer a cure, patients can learn how best to manage FMS and, in many cases, take back control to lead more fully functional and productive lives.
